A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
