Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
