Area Law Enforcement
Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important representative said the incident left him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
