European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
