Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
